Pflugerville Learning Extensions, or PFLEX classes, are small, weekly pull-out classes for students identified as Gifted and Talented. In these enrichment classes, students will combine math, science, English, social studies, the arts, and technology to explore the world around them. The unique interdisciplinary nature of the classes will foster creative thinking and problem solving as students learn to be global thinkers. Additionally, the PFLEX program will include opportunities for students to participate in Destination Imagination and Math Pentathlon.
Goals of PFLEX Class:
G/T identified students will be “pulled out” for PFLEX instruction. The PFLEX instructor will escort students from their homeroom classroom and back for each pull-out session. The classroom teacher will continue to receive differentiated instruction in the general education classroom. Students will be taught how to take responsibility for their own learning through alternative learning proposals and self-selected learning projects.
PFLEX Supplies: It is recommended that students have a composition/spiral notebook for PFLEX reflections. It is also recommended that he/she has a three inch, three-ring binder for portfolio purposes. If students are unable to purchase these items, please inform the PFLEX instructor so that supplies may be donated.Students will need tobring their composition notebook with them for each session. The PFLEX instructor will inform them of other specific supplies if needed for sessions. The PFLEX instructor will store student portfolios in a safe location for the school year.
Student Expectations: Students will be given a behavior contract during the first session of PFLEX to be signed by parents andreturned to the classroom teacher at school. If an incident occursduring the PFLEX session, a behavior ticket will be issued. The student will show his/her ticket whenreturning to class and obtain the classroom teacher’s signature. This ticket needs to go home with that childto obtain a parent signature and returned to the PFLEX instructor. Once a child receives three tickets, theclassroom teacher and PFLEX instructor will communicate together in decidingthe appropriate action needing to take place.
Grading Policy: Students will not receive report card grades for the PFLEX sessions. State law mandates that students are not required to make up class work missed during a pull-out session.
